A moment of triumph unfolded high above the San Bernardino National Forest on Monday morning, as one of Big Bear’s beloved bald eagle chicks took to the skies for the very first time.

While it’s still unclear whether it was Sunny or Gizmo—both thought to be sisters—what is certain is that one of the eaglets finally made the big leap from the nest. After a few tentative flaps and some determined wing stretches, the young eagle confidently lifted off, quickly soaring out of sight, leaving its sibling watching from the edge of the nest.

This exciting milestone follows a weekend of practice, when both chicks managed to hover briefly during their first attempts at flight, according to the Friends of Big Bear Valley. The organization has been closely monitoring the eaglets via their popular live camera feed, capturing every step of their growth.

Perched near the top of a towering 145-foot Jeffrey pine tree, the nest provides a breathtaking launchpad within the San Bernardino National Forest—a perfect spot for young eagles to test their wings.

The sky’s the limit now for this brave young raptor, and with one chick airborne, it’s only a matter of time before the other follows suit.
