Researchers say those interventions are often unnecessary and can sometimes be harmful.

"In really extreme cases, vets would give the birds drugs or hormonal therapies to stop them doing this," Heys said. "There have even been cases of surgery to completely de-sex birds."

Experts stress that unless the behavior is causing a serious medical issue — something they say is very rare — there is generally no reason to intervene.

Dr. Ana Basto, a veterinarian at the University of Lancashire who was not involved in the study, believes the findings will help improve the guidance vets provide to concerned pet owners.

"This research is pivotal," she said, "and will be a step toward achieving a more holistic understanding of why and how birds behave the way they do."

The study's co-author, evolutionary biologist Dr. Matilda Brindle of Oxford University, added that the research contributes to a growing body of evidence showing that non-reproductive sexual behaviors occur throughout the animal kingdom.

For bird owners, the takeaway is simple: while the behavior may seem unusual to humans, experts say it's often just another normal part of being a bird.

The future of transportation may be arriving sooner than many people expected.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng says it is on track to begin large-scale deliveries of its highly anticipated flying cars in 2027. Company President Brian Gu shared the update ahead of the Beijing Auto Show, outlining the company's ambitious plans for both flying vehicles and humanoid robots.

According to Gu, Xpeng expects to start producing flying cars at scale next year, with early customer deliveries potentially beginning as soon as late 2026. Interest in the futuristic vehicles is already strong, with more than 7,000 orders reportedly placed, most of them from customers in China. One of the biggest contests drawing statewide attention is the California gubernatorial primary. With Governor Gavin Newsom term-limited and unable to seek another term, voters are choosing which two candidates will advance to the November general election.

The crowded field features nearly 60 candidates, though a handful have emerged as the leading contenders.

Among the frontrunners are former California Attorney General and U.S. Health Secretary Xavier Becerra, billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer, and conservative commentator Steve Hilton.

Other notable candidates include former Congresswoman Katie Porter, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.

Under California's primary system, the top two vote-getters will move on to face each other in November, regardless of party affiliation.

Free Metro Rides Offered to Help Voters

To make it easier for residents to get to the polls, Los Angeles Metro is offering free transportation throughout Election Day.

Voters can ride Metro buses, trains, Bike Share services, and Metro Micro without paying a fare. Metro has also expanded voter access by placing ballot drop boxes at select transit stations, including Union Station and several other major transit hubs.

Officials hope the free rides will help increase voter participation across Los Angeles County.

Polling Centers Open Until 8 p.m.

Voting centers throughout Southern California opened early Tuesday morning and will remain available until 8 p.m.

Residents who still need to vote can visit any authorized voting center to cast their ballot in statewide and local races.

Election officials are reminding voters that ballots must be submitted before polls close in order to be counted.

Measure ER: Voters Decide on Healthcare Funding

Los Angeles County voters are also weighing in on Measure ER, a ballot proposal that would temporarily increase the county sales tax by one-half cent.

Supporters say the measure is needed to help fund healthcare programs and other essential public services after federal funding cuts led to the closure of six county-operated health clinics.

If approved, the tax increase would remain in effect for five years and is expected to generate roughly $1 billion annually for county services.

While tax increases often face resistance from voters, advocates argue that Measure ER could provide critical funding for healthcare access and public health programs throughout the county.

Results Expected After Polls Close

As voting continues throughout the day, attention will soon shift to the first wave of election results once polls close at 8 p.m.

With major statewide races, local contests, and important ballot measures on the line, California's Election Day promises to be one of the most closely watched political events of the year.

MIT Scientists Develop Tiny “Molecular Camera” That Could Detect Bladder Cancer Earlier

A team of researchers at MIT has created a breakthrough sensor that could change the way doctors detect and monitor bladder cancer — one of the most common and expensive cancers to treat in the United States.

Every year, roughly 85,000 Americans are diagnosed with bladder cancer. While many patients respond well to treatment, the cancer has an alarming tendency to return. About half of patients experience tumor recurrence within five years, leading to constant monitoring, repeated procedures, and rising healthcare costs.

Now, MIT researchers say they may have found a way to catch those returning tumors much earlier using a futuristic catheter-based sensor system that acts almost like a “camera for molecules.”

A New Way to Spot Cancer Before It’s Visible

The new technology uses carbon nanotubes — microscopic hollow cylinders made of carbon — that naturally glow under laser light. Scientists coated these nanotubes with specially designed polymers that behave like synthetic antibodies, allowing them to detect specific cancer-related proteins.

For this study, the team focused on a bladder cancer biomarker called NMP-22, a protein already approved by the FDA for bladder cancer screening.

Normally, NMP-22 is detected through urine tests, but there’s a problem: by the time the protein shows up in high enough amounts in urine, tumors may already be more advanced.

MIT’s new approach skips the waiting game.

Instead of looking for diluted biomarkers in urine, researchers designed a catheter coated with nanosensors that can detect the protein directly inside the bladder — right where cancer cells are producing it.

The device also includes a tiny rotating ball lens that shines laser light onto the sensors and reads the fluorescent signals they emit. Those signals create what researchers call a “chemical image,” helping doctors identify not only whether cancer is present, but exactly where it’s hiding.

“It’s like a camera for molecules instead of light,” said MIT chemical engineering professor Michael Strano, senior author of the study.

Nearly 50,000 Times More Sensitive

According to the researchers, the sensor system is dramatically more sensitive than traditional urinalysis methods.

In animal testing, the technology proved about 180 times more sensitive because it measures biomarkers directly at their source instead of relying on diluted urine samples. Overall, the researchers estimate the system could be nearly 50,000 times more sensitive than standard urine testing approaches.

That level of precision may allow doctors to detect tumors as small as 16 square millimeters — potentially long before they become visible during routine examinations.

The fluorescent nanosensors essentially create a map of suspicious activity inside the bladder lining, allowing physicians to pinpoint tumors earlier and more accurately.

Making Cancer Monitoring Faster and Less Invasive

Currently, bladder cancer survivors often undergo regular cystoscopy procedures, where doctors insert a camera into the bladder to visually inspect for recurring tumors. These screenings can happen yearly — or even more often for high-risk patients.

The MIT team hopes their technology could eventually make monitoring easier, faster, less invasive, and more affordable.

Researchers are already working on shrinking the prototype so it can fit into existing cystoscopes commonly used in doctors’ offices.

The goal is to identify tumors before they grow large enough to be seen with conventional imaging.

Beyond Bladder Cancer

Scientists say this technology may have applications far beyond bladder cancer.

Because the nanosensors can be customized to detect different molecules, the same system could potentially be adapted to identify other cancers or diseases involving hard-to-see biomarkers.

Researchers believe the technology could someday assist in detecting gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions through endoscopic procedures.

“The beauty of polymer chemistry is that we can develop new sensors tailored to different diseases,” said MIT researcher Wonjun Yim.

The study was published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology and funded by organizations including the Koch Institute, Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, the National Science Foundation, and Schmidt Science.

A new physics study is turning heads after researchers discovered that time may appear to move in reverse inside collapsing neutron stars.

Scientists from Durban University of Technology and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa recently explored the bizarre behavior of these ultra-dense cosmic objects, and the math led them somewhere unexpected: inside the collapse, the normal “arrow of time” may flip backward.

Before anyone starts planning a trip through time, this isn’t something humans could ever witness firsthand. But according to the equations, the idea is mathematically possible under the extreme conditions found inside a collapsing neutron star.

The research, published in the European Physical Journal C, focuses on entropy — the scientific concept often used to explain why time only moves forward. In everyday life, entropy always increases. Things naturally move from order to disorder.

Think about dropping a glass on the floor. It shatters into pieces, but those pieces never magically reassemble themselves. Heat spreads out instead of concentrating itself back into one spot. That one-way movement is what gives us our sense of time moving forward.

But neutron stars may play by different rules.

When researchers modeled a collapsing neutron star, they found that entropy actually appeared to decrease as the collapse intensified. In physics terms, that’s essentially the equivalent of time running backward.

Imagine squeezing toothpaste out of a tube and then watching it somehow slide perfectly back inside. Under normal physics, that shouldn’t happen. Yet inside these extreme cosmic environments, the equations suggest something surprisingly similar.

So why would this happen?

Scientists say it comes down to a battle between two types of entropy. Regular entropy spreads matter out and creates disorder, while gravitational entropy does the opposite — it pulls matter together into tighter, denser clumps.

In places with unimaginably strong gravity, like neutron stars, gravity may become powerful enough to overpower the normal forward flow of entropy.

And neutron stars are already some of the strangest objects in the universe.

They’re formed when massive stars die and collapse in on themselves, leaving behind an incredibly dense core. A neutron star can pack more mass than the Sun into a sphere only a few miles wide. Their gravity is so intense that they behave in ways more similar to black holes than ordinary stars.

The findings could also connect to one of the biggest mysteries in cosmology: the Big Bang and the origin of time itself.

Scientists have long struggled to explain why the universe started in such a highly ordered state even though entropy naturally increases. One possibility is that certain extreme regions of the universe may locally reverse or balance entropy in ways we still don’t fully understand.

The researchers aren’t claiming they’ve solved the mystery of time. Instead, they see this work as another important step toward understanding how gravity, spacetime, and entropy interact under the most extreme conditions imaginable.

Still, the idea that time itself could reverse inside a collapsing star is enough to make anyone stop and think — even if only for a moment.

Planning a summer road trip? You might want to pack a little extra patience along with the snacks and playlists.

A new 2025 survey from Travel Vacationer found that more than 75% of Americans are planning to hit the road this summer. Road trips remain one of the country’s favorite traditions, but not every stretch of highway comes with friendly drivers.

Consumer Affairs recently released its annual list of the states with the worst road rage, highlighting where travelers may need to stay extra alert behind the wheel.

The rankings were based on data involving fatal crashes linked to reckless or careless driving, dangerous driving violations, and even traffic incidents involving gun violence.

For the second year in a row, Louisiana landed at the top of the list as the state with the worst road rage in America.

According to the report, nearly 60% of the state’s fatal crashes and traffic deaths were connected to aggressive or careless driving — the highest rate in the nation. Louisiana also ranked near the top for speeding and reckless driving violations.

And the consequences there can be serious. Drivers charged with reckless driving in Louisiana can face up to 90 days in jail for a first offense and as much as six months for repeat offenses.

New Mexico came in at No. 2, due in large part to a high number of traffic incidents involving gun violence. Consumer Affairs noted that the state’s rate of road-related gun violence is nearly four times the national average.

Colorado ranked No. 3 and reportedly has the highest number of aggressive driving and speeding violations per capita in the country — more than eight times the national average.

Rounding out the top five were Arkansas and Montana.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Maine earned the title of the calmest state for drivers, making it one of the more relaxing places to cruise this summer.

So before you map out your next getaway, it may be worth brushing up on your defensive driving skills — especially if your route takes you through some of the country’s more aggressive driving hotspots.

California may be taking another shot at high-speed travel — this time with buses.

The California Department of Transportation, better known as California Department of Transportation, is exploring the possibility of a high-speed bus network capable of traveling up to 140 miles per hour between major cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The idea is still in the early planning stages, but officials say it could become an alternative to flying or driving for Californians who frequently travel between Northern and Southern California.

Caltrans says the concept is part of a broader push to study what it calls “high-speed buses.” Potential routes could include heavily traveled freeways like the Harbor Freeway, the San Bernardino Freeway, Interstate 5, and Interstate 10.

According to Caltrans feasibility studies manager Ryan Snyder, the state may first focus on interregional routes connecting Los Angeles with San Diego, the Bay Area, and Sacramento.

Some Californians are already intrigued by the idea, especially frequent flyers who are tired of dealing with airports.

One Bay Area traveler said a high-speed bus could be a more accessible and convenient option than flying several times a year. Others simply like the idea of another transportation choice that could potentially cut travel time.

Still, transportation experts say there are major hurdles to overcome before the idea could become reality.

One of the biggest concerns is traffic congestion on California’s already packed freeways. Experts say the buses would likely need their own dedicated lanes, and those lanes would have to be newly built rather than converted from existing traffic lanes.

The proposal also arrives while California continues investing billions into the state’s long-debated high-speed rail project. The California High-Speed Rail Authority reports that more than $14 billion has already been spent on the rail system intended to eventually connect San Francisco and Los Angeles.

That history has left some residents cautiously optimistic but skeptical about whether another ambitious transportation project can actually get off the ground.

Caltrans has not released any official cost estimates for the high-speed bus concept. Officials also acknowledged that if 140 mph buses prove too difficult or expensive, a more realistic version operating between 80 and 100 mph could still provide a faster alternative to current travel options.

For now, the project remains a concept, but it’s another sign California is continuing to search for new ways to move people around the state faster — and possibly with fewer airport headaches.

Caltrans issued a statement writing:

"At this time, the concept remains exploratory. Caltrans is currently exploring the feasibility of operating higherspeed buses on California freeways as a potential enhancement to the state's public transportation network. This earlystage assessment is focused on understanding how fast a bus could be safely designed to travel on our freeways, what vehicle and safety design requirements would be necessary and whether any modifications to freeway facilities would support such operations.

Vigorous project analysis and feasibility studies are part of Caltrans' process to determine viability for many concepts and designs intended to improve the transportation network. Caltrans is evaluating what would be required before determining whether future testing or implementation of high-speed busses is appropriate.

The Department's long-term strategic vision accounts for cutting-edge innovation that will transform the transportation landscape and help our goal of improving quality of life for all Californians. With measured analysis, thorough exploration and thoughtful planning, many of these bold concepts will shape the future of a thriving, connected California.

What started as a routine shipment of clothing turned into a massive international drug bust after authorities discovered millions of dollars worth of cocaine hidden inside a truck carrying products from Kim Kardashian’s popular shapewear brand, Skims.

According to the UK’s National Crime Agency, 40-year-old Polish truck driver Jakub Jan Konkel was sentenced to 13 and a half years in prison after being caught smuggling nearly 200 pounds of cocaine into England.

The bust happened last September at the Port of Harwich in Essex, England, when Border Force officers stopped Konkel as he arrived on a ferry from the Netherlands with a truck loaded with 28 pallets of Skims clothing.

After scanning the vehicle with X-ray equipment, investigators discovered something suspicious hidden inside a specially modified compartment in the truck’s rear doors. Authorities uncovered 90 packages of cocaine weighing a total of 198 pounds, with an estimated street value of about $8.4 million.

After the political crisis in Belarus started from August 9, 2020, Anton Prakapenia, the band's frontman and co-creator had to flee Belarus, ending up in Los Angeles, California. Later on, he gets acquainted with the bassist Fausto Rodriguez and the drummer David Geller, who are now comprising the skeleton crew of the band. After that, the keyboardist Matt Valtierra joins the band. The guys are continuing working on their music, recording their first US album "American Made", as well as multiple releases later on, and they believe that for the Formal Inn band, the future is yet to come =)

After a historic journey around the Moon, the crew of Artemis II is officially headed home—and the final moments of the mission are just as intense as the launch.

Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen are expected to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off Southern California at around 8:07 p.m. EDT on Friday, April 10, wrapping up a 10-day, nearly 700,000-miles around the Moon.

Here’s everything you need to know about the dramatic return of Orion spacecraft.

Splashdown Timeline: Minute-by-Minute

The return to Earth is a carefully choreographed sequence—and every second counts:

7:33 p.m. – The Orion crew module separates from its service module, exposing its heat shield for the fiery reentry through Earth’s atmosphere, where temperatures soar to nearly 3,000°F.
7:37 p.m. – A short engine burn adjusts the capsule’s angle, ensuring the heat shield is perfectly aligned for entry.
7:53 p.m. – Orion hits the upper atmosphere at about 400,000 feet, traveling nearly 35 times the speed of sound. The crew experiences intense G-forces (up to 3.9 Gs), and communication drops during a six-minute blackout caused by plasma buildup.
8:03 p.m. – Drogue parachutes deploy at about 22,000 feet, stabilizing and slowing the capsule.
8:04 p.m. – The main parachutes open at 6,000 feet, dramatically reducing speed.
